The studied art historian, trained stonemason and restorer cuts filigree architecture into massive blocks of stone. Simmonds explores the secret of architecture, that which lies between the stone and the space, that which makes building ART. Sometimes he creates lifelike models of historical treasures, such as the columns of the Roman Temple of Mars or the Florentine Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, sometimes he creates free spatial compositions in which he explores the effects of light and shadow, proportion and material.
