Matthew Simmonds' works are overwhelming and delicate, science and art at the same time. The studied art historian, trained stonemason and restorer cuts filigree architecture into massive blocks of stone. Simmonds explores the secret of architecture, that which lies between the stone and the space, that which makes building ART. Sometimes he creates lifelike models of historical treasures, such as the columns of the Roman Temple of Mars or the Florentine Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, sometimes he creates free spatial compositions in which he explores the effects of light and shadow, proportion and material. Simmonds' works are captivating in their precision, artistry and beauty. They prove that a house can be much more than a dwelling. It is a refuge and a place of longing, a symbol of power and a space for meditation, overwhelming and inviting, hard work and ethereal beauty all in one.
